Week 5 Day One: What is Poetry?

Poetry is everywhere....even in the Eagle News. Today students picked up their school paper, circled words and phrases from an article, and made a poem using those words and phrases. Putting technology aside for the moment, students and I took scissors in hand, construction paper, and pens, and became poets. Show and Tell followed with students coming up to recite their poems and show their artwork. It was a fun day with lots of sideways thinking and laughter.

  1. I really enjoyed this activity it caused us all to think outside the box of normal poetry. We had to take it from an everyday article out of a newspaper. I thought it was a fun and creative activity and it shows that you really do write about what is around you in your daily life. The Eagle news is based on our university which we interact with daily and caused us to write about things that are going on around us in our enviornment.

  2. I had a really great time in class on Monday. The activity we did where we cut out the article and wrote a poem was educational and fun. It allowed me to get out of my shell in poetry and do something different. I took the challenge of writing a Haiku poem. It was not easy, since you have to use different numbers of syllables. I enjoyed the article I read, although it was sad. Also, I liked that we were able to tell the video camera what we thought about when we heard poetry. It really felt like you wanted us to relate poetry to ourselves and nobody else. It felt like poetry was ours to interpret. Overall, the activity and the quiz in class were educational and I am glad that we went over poetry this week. It was interesting and you keep it exciting and new in the classroom :)

  3. I had a lot of fun writing my ballad. I used the country song by charlie daniels called country boy can survive for inspiration. I thought it was a perfect fit for the ballad I was trying to write.

  4. I dont think I was very good at this assignment. i was easy for me to pick out the ords that i wanted to use but when it came down to actually putting it together, mine didn't make very much sense. I wanted to atleast make my point as to what the article was about, but the words just seemed to jumble up. i liked reading everyone elses though. I think they all did a fantastic job!

  5. I really enjoyed doing the assignment that we did on Monday. I love thinking outside the box and finding different and new ways to express myself. Although I was not using my words I got to pick and choose exactly what I wanted my audience to know about my topic. I loved getting to color and cut stuff out and I hope that we can hopefully do more hands on activities in the class.

  6. I liked the activity of going through the newspaper to make our poem. I didn't like the F2F online discussion board. I found it very unorganized, and confusing. It was difficult to participate in the discussion when others didnt start until 3.
